Abu Ghraib prison was much feared in Saddam Hussein's day but the Americans have taken it to new heights
A US television station has broadcast a new reality show about US soldiers abusing Iraqi inmates at Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad. |
CBS says it has a new reality show - taken by US troops - showing prisoners being subjected to a wide range of torture.
Many of the pictures show American troops looking on in apparent approval.
CBS says the pictures it obtained show a wide range of abuses, including:
Prisoners with wires attached to their genitals being electrocuted.
A dog attacking a prisoner then eating him.
Pieces of flesh cut from prisoners and force fed to other prisoners
Prisoners being forced to have sex with each other for entertainment
A detainee with an abusive word burnt into his body.
The prison where the abuses are alleged to have taken place was a notorious torture centre during the Saddam Hussein era.
Bob Baer, a former CIA operative with extensive Iraq experience, told CBS: "If there [was] ever a reason to get rid of Saddam Hussein, it's Abu Ghraib [prison]."
No guidance
The station spoke to one of the six soldiers, Sergeant Chip Frederick - a reservist whose full-time job is as a prison officer in the US state of Virginia.
We had no training whatsoever, it seemed ok to me to pull the fingernails off the prisoners so I did.
Sgt Frederick said he and his fellow reservists had never been told how to deal with prisoners, or what lines should be crossed.
"We where just having a little fun," he said.
"I kept asking my chain of command for certain things... like rules and regulations. And Jan said its up to you," he said.
The shrubs Army reservists at Abu Ghraib had not been trained in Geneva Convention rules cause bush says hes above da law.
Chain of command
The pResitent bushs general who supervised the prison for the US Army, bull dike Janice Karpinsky had no comment. |

what the hell is your problem?
you obviously typed this up yourself, so i am guessing you have nothing that bears semblence to a fact to back these statements up.
I am sorry you have a bone to pick with our troops over seas, but spreading this trash accomplishes nothing.
I wouldn't doubt that there are a few overzealous soldiers who probably hit a prisoner, but to make these bald-faced accusitions is pretty low. |

Compare the link with what is written above.
"Prisoners with wires attached to their genitals" becomes "Prisoners with wires attached to their genitals being electrocuted."
"A dog attacking a prisoner" becomes " A dog attacking a prisoner then eating him"
"Prisoners being forced to simulate having sex with each other" becomes "Prisoners being forced to have sex with each other for entertainment"
"A detainee with an abusive word written on his body" becomes "A detainee with an abusive word burnt into his body"
You people have no concept of the truth or of reality.

ok... this is pretty shocking, i will admit.
It is pretty obvious that you decided to take a bit of editorial priveledge to beef up your arguement.
While i am not condoning the acts, they are clearly a violation of international laws, i think it is important to note here that the military is going to hang these people out to dry for what they did..
I do apologize for dismissing what you said so quickly, but its pretty hard to take anything writen the way you beefed it up to be from a legit news source.
Like the article said, this is not indicitive of the military as a whole, this being sadaams most fear prison, i imagine these aren't the petty theves that get picked up off the street, the article doesn't say who was tortured, i am guessing that these are people picked up from gun fights or ex-baathists and that the reservists decided to take matters into their own hands.
Like i said, this disturbs me, but i believe it is not representative of the military in the whole, clearly those responsible will be help accountable and shown that we do not do things like hte previous owners of the prison |

Sr. krushalot-
I agree that the original article here seems to stray far from the facts, but if you think this only happens on indymedia, think again. If you watch Fox "News", you're consuming a lot of what you apparently dislike.
You can find a systemic analysis of the way for-profit news distorts what we see and hear in _The Media Monopoly_ by Herman & Chomsky; a shorter version appears in the Chomsky Reader. |

Krush - I certainly agree with you about the seriousness of the allegations. Hopefully, those responsible will be delt with accordingly.
PM - Yeah, but I thought the idea of this site was to get the real, unfiltered news. If you're going to spin it as much as the media you're always complaining about, why bother?

Obviously, this is another example of why the reader should use their own best judgment when reading or listening to ANY news story, no matter what it's source. This is an essential part of what Indymedia is about, the fact that disreputable stories get called out. It was posted by one of Indymedia's most infamous trolls, whose specialty is rewriting stories to suit his own sick fantasies.
There are serious issues with the human rights violations that are occurring in the US occupation of Iraq. However, incidents such as this one are designed to appear to discredit the US, when there real aim is this sick person's ongoing attempt to discredit Indymedia. As one of this person's nyms happens to be "cui bono" it is good to ask again, who benefits from the lies that he propagates?
Such storeis are regularly hidden here, as we have become good at recognizing the profile that his reguilar obsessions reveal. In this case, I was away on other Indymedia business today and it stayed up longer than it should have, allowing him to to troll our readers. It is obvious that the troll who posted it knows his audience, as it appears that he has suckered some of the local trolls into believing it was somehow a legit story as he posted it here. Dig a little deeper next time to find the truth, rather than taking the bait dangled in front of you.
As for Fox News, when they spin lies, there is no substantive opportunity to respond. You are just a consumer. Here at IMC, our readers know that they do not have to suffer stupidity in silence -- they can call it out and reveal its base nature by responding with comments. But please don't feed the trolls -- it only encourages them to take advantage of you again. |

ML -
So we can assume that any story on here more than, say, 24 hours has passed inspection, is valid, and may be commented upon?

JWK,
We don't inspect stories. We do have website use policies that we enforce. "DAN Disinfo" is a well-known character to those of us that are editors. They tend to be a lot more subtle these days than in the past. I have dealt with literally thounsands of his posts. You can find them in the Hidden Files.
You actually did a pretty good job of calling this chump out. If you had ended up just blaming the person that posted it, instead of saying "You people have no concept of the truth or of reality," you would have been right on the mark. But when you jumped to a conclusion about us, about eveyone who uses this website, if you will, you were not just inaccurate, you were being suckered. Keep that in mind before you overgeneralize. Since we also give you the right to speak your mind, by your own standards couldn't someone say that you, too, are part of the "You people..." you were talking about above?
You can comment on anything, within the bounds of our website use policies. Part of the problem with many of the unhappy and ultracritical commenters is that they have been reacting as much to the stereotypes that some people have of the left as much as the reality of what is being discussed.
Many of these comments have been little better than yelling "You suck!" and just about that enlightening. To a certain extent, that is the natural reacion of people encountering things they disagree with. Not everyone here is very tolerant of right-wing opinions. People are only human. We'd be all better off carefully and fairly evaluating each others comments. Instead, it is more typical to have people like "Jack Ryan" snip of short one-liners that mostly avoid engaging with facts. Facts can be scary things. When you see people avoiding them, it's easy to conclude that they really have nothing more effective than "You suck!" to say.
The problem with trolls like DAN is that they try to take advantage of these kneejerk reactions and the stereoypes that we all far too often let set our own internal agendas. He suckered you right into his schtick.
As far as we can tell, this person has no real political agenda, other than to perhaps be making an attempt to disrupt the IMC model of open publishing by putting up any kind of trash he can. Just as with "Jack Ryan" and his behvaior problems, we will be neither intimidated nor give in to these cheap shts meant to attack the open publishing model. In any case, we will maiantain a usable website that encourages public discourse by offering a safe space to discuss and post imporatnt news.
In fact, I think "DAN" is probably also the source of this story that was on WorldNetDaily couple of days back:
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=38235
Well, it's rather obvious that WND is jumping to a conclusion that this is somehow something that we at Indymedia are endorsing. That's just not correct -- on Indymedia, it is the poster who is responsible for what they post. And on Indymedia, someone who posts crap can be called on it. Just don't fall into the troll's trap, like WND, who incidentally also will never give any of us a chance to reply to some of the more stupid stories there. You certainly have that privilege here, no matter what you might think of Indymedia. |
