Report from spirited noon rally. |
Between 50 and 100 demonstrators held a rally outside of Swanlund Administration Building on the UIUC campus today in support of the 40 anti-chief demonstrators who have now occupied that building for 30 hours.
An informal poll of dozens of onlookers revealed that all but a small handful (4 or 5) were anti-chief. No organized pro-Chief presense was seen. The only pro-chief observer that agreed to be interviewed expressed his support for the students right to free speech and free assembly even though he thought they would not and should not win their demands.
Several television news cameras were there but demonstrators said the media was completely absent for the 7am rally and 8am meeting with Chancellor Cantor. Results of the meeting with the Chancellor have not been released yet as the occupiers are deliberating.
One administration AP that I interviewed said that she was sure that the work of campus administration was continuing from other locations and she didn't feel that this occupation would prevent any vital university business from being transacted. She expressed her support for the students.
The police presense remains small and neutral -- occupiers walk freely in and out of the building for smoke breaks and interviews -- however when one supporter brought several bags of food for the occupiers the police would not allow it in. Supporters chanted "give them the food" and occupiers chanted "give us the food" but the police would not allow it. The food sat on the steps until the end of the rally when it was moved to the side and still sits there. The police present at the event would give no reason why the food was not being allowed in.
As of 1pm the rally dispersed but many supporters remain on the steps and intend to do so in rotation until the occupiers demands are met.
Chairman Eppley of the Board of Trustees continues to refuse to meet with the demonstrators. |

Hi, are you the real Jack Ryan?
I was just curious about whether it was the same person who is running for office.
Thanks! |

Jack Ryan is simply a troll. S/he's been with this website for a long time. Given the amount of time s/he spends anonymously trolling on this newswire, I imagine that Jack is certainly not a person who has the time or courage to run for public office, even as a Republican. |
