Reading today's News-Gazette
you'd think that the whole community is nothing but excited about the Super Wal-Mart
opening in Savoy next week. According to the article, the store's manager--who is
the only quoted source--says that "people have been driving up and coming to the
door for weeks, asking when the store is going to open."
Funny that no mention is made of
the union protests that have happened at the store's construction site, nor
the vandalism that struck the store's construction site in February.
Even the Gazette has reported about some Savoy residents' concern about the store, and reported the the vandalism when it happened.
Still, the N-G declined to attempt to put the vandalism in perspective with other similar political actions against superstores around the nation.
Of course, if you don't report on opposition, then there isn't any, right? The News-Gazette may be a lot of things, but
it would never want to be accused of being anti-business. Even if Wal-Mart bypasses local papers for its local print advertising (it prefers to use direct mail).
Maybe N-G owner Professional Impressions is licking its lips over potential increased ad revenue at its radio stations, WDWS and WHMS?
For local perspectives on Wal-Mart that don't come from the new store's manager, see the stories published on the Indymedia site, and pick up
the latest issue of the U-C IMC's newspaper, the public i. |

Walmart Not Paying Enough? |

I found it interesting that Walmart is still lookong for 10% of their workforce at this late date. I would imagine that Walmart, despite claims they pay "competitive" wages, just isn't offering enough in pay or benefits to attract the workers it needs. People want and need Living Wage jobs, not some dead-end job with cult-like overtones which doesn't pay enough to keep a roof over your head and eat at the same time.
And really News-Gazette, why don't you clearly mark this "story" as ADVERTISING? |
