I read the linked post. Nowhere does it mention any IMC site furnishing posters' IPs to the police, nor does it even come within hailing distance of that idea.

Most, if not all, IMC sites either refrain from logging posters' IPs or regularly delete log information.

Got any evidence in support of your claim? Or shall we just go with the null hypothesis- that you're full of FUD?

If you're talking about proffr's case, he never said Indymedia gave his infom, IPs or otherwise, to the police. In fact, the Cinncy IMC people refused to comply with the illegal demands of the police in that particular case. AFAIK, this is what has happened in the few other cases where such demands have been made by the government -- they have all failed to gain the government any IPs or other info from any IMC.

What happened in proffr's case is that he was openly publishing his email addy (at the same time he was threatening the president. The cops went to his ISP and got the info linked to the email addy he provided them in public. They did not get it through IMC.

But this begs the question -- Should you be doing stupid shit on-line that might attract the notice of the police? No, because through means such as Cranivore and other spy systems, the police do not need access to Indymedia servers to get info on such activities. They sniff for what they want before it ever arrives at an IMC. In any case, most IMC's, including UC IMC, routinely dump IP records, so there is nothing to be gained for asking IMCs for what they don't have anyway.

IMCs do reserve the right to temporarily record IPs in certain extremely limited circumstances to analyze and protect their servers from intentional attacks by identifying abusers of our services. If you're not spamming or trying to hack us, we could not care less about who uses our site, since such identifying info is routinely dumped otherwise.
