House Panders to Oil Industy--How did your rep vote? Current rating: 0
06 Aug 2001
Last Wednesday, the US House of Representatives voted 240 to 189 to pass a bill dubbed the Bush-Cheney Energy Bill - or H.R. 4 -- laden with gifts to oil, gas, and coal industries and turning a blind eye to alternative energy, fuel efficiency, and wilderness protection. Find out how your representative voted.

During the debate on the bill, two two important pro-environment amendments to H.R. 4 suffered defeat. One of the unsuccessful amendments would have protected Alaska\'s fragile Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from the ravages of oil and gas drilling. The other failed amendment would have made Sport
Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and other light trucks abide by the same gas mileage standards as automobiles.

Representatives voting against the pro-environment amendments and for the anti-environment Energy bill chose to sacrifice a pristine wilderness area in
Alaska to meaningless energy production and ignored reasonable steps to improve America\'s energy efficiency - something that would have gone a long
way in reducing America\'s oil consumption.

The Markey-Johnson amendment to prevent opening Alaska\'s pristine coastal plain to oil and gas drilling was defeated on a vote of 206 to 223. It is
important to note that the estimated oil supply from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge would meet the nation\'s energy needs for only 6 months and
wouldn\'t enter the market for 10 years. Furthermore, a recent League of Conservation Voters poll revealed that 62% of Americans oppose Bush\'s proposal
to drill in the Refuge. To win the vote, Bush\'s allies funneled millions into advertising and lobbying campaigns that mislead representatives and labor
groups into believing that drilling in the Refuge could be conducted in an environmentally sound way that would create hundreds of thousands of jobs.

The Boehlert-Markey amendment that sought to close the loophole in fuel efficiency (CAFE) standards that allows SUVs and light trucks to skirt the same
fuel efficiency standards that apply to cars was defeated 160 to 269. It is important to note here that a recent report from the National Academy of Sciences
concluded that the auto industry could improve the fuel efficiency of gas-guzzling SUVs by as much as one-third over the next 15 years without raising
overall costs for consumers. However, last week General Motors and other auto manufacturers distributed materials to frighten representatives into
believing that closing the SUV loophole would cost lives and jobs.

How Can Anybody Be Surprized!
Current rating: 0
24 Aug 2001
As one who was born in Urbana March 24,1946 I have always praised Urbana, Ill. My study of the state and city tell me that most people are very fair and decent members of America, mostly working class. That the biology teacher attacked for teaching Darwin was a graduate, as well as his world famous lawyer Clarance Darrow speaks volumes for honesty and search for truth. It was the state that put the only trust worthy republican ever elected president of the United States, old Abe in office.
Having said that, I am sure that if the people see the damage being done to our country they will act in the best interest of our country, party's be damed! Their has never been a single republican who can say he marched with the civil rights people, the democrats did. The absentence of any concern for the elderly drug cost problem takes a back seat to more "star wars" toys, the congress making the choice is republican. The disgraceful behavior in the international arena by the republican administration will take years to repair our good name.
Clinton may have been lacking in moral strength, but he would never allow our big industries to attack our states without an investigation! The industrialists are feeding on our country as it is getting sicker, all of their making, the tax cut, star wars preposals, rejection of drug plan to protect elders having to choose between food and prescriptions. Don't listen to the "spins" listen to the things that are being done in our name!
