N-G Poll For/against Chief Current rating: 0
12 Nov 2003
The N-G is running a poll for/against the chief.
As of 12:30 on Wednesday, the poll was 51-49 against. Please visit their website and vote. I know, I know, it isn't going to make much of a difference, but it was suprising to me that the vote was 50-50.

See the following to get the email address to send an email to the Board before tomorrow's vote.

I hate to ruin all the fun, but I fail to see what the point of these polls are, and thus I fail to see the point in spamming the vote?

At best, they are an attempt at simulating democracy, by giving the appearance that each of us can vote on these issues and make ourselves heard. But the lack of any kind of methodology and any real outcome reveal them to be useless time wasters.

At worst, they are crass come-ons to get us to visit the News-Gazette website, subsituting cheap thrills and petty competition for actual meaningful content.

Far more is accomplished by contacting the Board and its members directly with thoughtful, respectful dialogue. Far more has been accomplished with a more than decade-long sustained campaign of education and protest.

The BOT is not a democracy, and is in no way directly accountable to any of us. However, it is nonetheless refreshingly positive to see that the collective voice of reason may have rung through to them.

With the BoT having just put the inevitable off again, it is interesting to look at the N-G poll results. As of this writing, with 23,230 votes cast, the poll shows responders favoring the Chief's retirement leading, with 64% in favor of putting the mascot out to pasture.

Even given the unscientific and subjective nature of such polls, it looks like a landslide in favor of retirement.

I wonder if the N-G will mention this poll in their printed edition? I think it is a new record for number of responses to one of their polls.
