Bunge brings in strike-breakers (for radio) Current rating: 0
09 Jul 2001
Replacement workers are brought in to the Bunge-Lauhoff grain processing plant in Danville, where 200 people have been on strike since May 16.
Striking workers at Bunge-Lauhoff grain company in Danville suffered another setback last Wednesday when the company brought replacement workers into the factory. Since the beginning of the strike on May 16, the company has attempted to keep the factory operating with company personnel from other factories, but they didn't hire outside replacements until last Wednesday. The arrival of replacements followed by only two days an overwhelming vote to reject the compnay's final contract offer, which included reductions in real pay for employees, less job security, and more company control over work hours. Since last Monday's contract vote, the company has published full-page advertisements in area newspapers, claiming that they are offering a fair contract and suggeting that the community should not support the strikers. A negotiating session with a federal mediator was scheduled for this afternoon. About 200 members of Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical, and Energy Workers local 6-0972 are striking at the Danville grain processing factory.
