Would someone please post somewhere (actually prominently somewhere), what the heck "$3-$50 sliding-scale" means? I want to support the IMC, but I'm not turning up at Canopy with $50. What's the deal, in detail, please. |

Pay What You Can Afford |

If you haven't encountered the term "sliding scale" before, it means that you decide to pay what you can afford. In this case, the minimum suggested donation would be $3, which would be appropriate if you have little income. However, we hope that many people would pay more than the minimum. After all, you get access to _sixteen_ bands, plus other entertainment. Where else do you have an entertainment bargain like that, plus get to decide how much you can actually afford to pay?
We sincerely hope that many people decide that they can afford $5, $10, or even $20, maybe even a few can actually afford $50, but we are only asking that you consider your own circumstances in deciding, not asking for a copy of your tax return. Most of the activities and services of the Independent Media Center require _no_ admission fee or payment. We offer a wide variety of services to the community at no cost. Yet, we also have overhead. Plus the shutdown by the city of Urbana of the performance space at the IMC cost us our biggest income producer, creating a financial crisis this summer. Addressing code issues in our space cost $2000 that was not in our budget, in addition to the hit to our income.
All we are asking is for the public to be as generous as possible. All the bands and the Canopy Club itself are donating their labor and facilities, so %100 of what is raised will go to the IMC. Please consider their generosity in making these donations, in addition to your own circumstances, when you offer what you can afford for admission to IMC Fest.
Thanks for your question, which gave us an opportunity to clarify this for yourself and others. We look forward to entertaining hundreds of IMC supporters on August 30. |
