An informational and call for assistance from a Champaign citizen concerned for animal rights enforcement in Champaign County. |
Will you tolerate violence against animals in your city?
Nancy and I witnessed a horrific dog killing on the 13th of this month
in the 600 block of Springfield Avenue, Champaign. More details are
contained in the letter below, which we are sending to government
officials and the press. With the help of the local and National ASPCA,
we and others have been applying pressure to the police and state's
attorney's office, both directly and through the media.
Now we need your help. Jesse Winters of the National ASPCA will speak
in the open forum of the Champaign City Council on Tuesday, July 3d,
after 7PM in the City Council Chambers at the City Building, 102 N. Neil
St. She will speak about the way in which the police handled the
investigation, and also about the humane investigation training program
that the ASPCA and other agencies offered for free at the Champaign
Police Department, which was reportedly attended by officers from other
areas, but not by a single Champaign police officer. She may make the
suggestion to the City Council that a task force be formed to
investigate how animal cruelty and torture cases can be handled better
in the future.
I am asking you to attend this meeting in support, and we hope to make a
statement by our numbers. Jesse will ask how many people are attending
to express their concern about animal cruelty in Champaign, and I would
love for there to be an ocean of hands.
She does not expect people to speak at this meeting- in fact she would
prefer if they didn't, as she needs to present things in a respectful
and cooperative fashion in order for the issue not to be dismissed.
This does not mean that we will let this disappear! But, since the CPD
preserved essentially no evidence at the scene of this possible Class 4
felony, there will most likely not be a conviction. Our goal now is to
get the "powers that be" to realize that animal cruelty and torture will
not be tolerated here, and to see to it that such crimes are treated as
seriously as all other felonies.
We are asking you to attend if at all possible, as an expression of your
concern for public safety and on behalf of the animals who cannot
represent themselves. Nancy will be there, unfortunately I have an
unavoidable business commitment at the time; in exchange I'm trying to
round up support. I know that this is bad day for many people, but what
better way to celebrate freedom of life, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness? Please forward this message to everyone that you know who
has the heart to care, and the courage to express it.
Thank you very much,
Mark and Nancy Rubel and many others
