Help Start a Bike Co-op
& develop CU into a cycling-centric community!
Wed. August 9, 7 PM
at the Independent Media Center
in the downtown Urbana post office building (Broadway & Elm)
organized by the Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign: www.uiuc.edu/ro/IBP
and the Independent Media Center: www.ucimc.org
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
ABOUT THE BIKE PROJECT
There's a new group in town! We are The Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign Inc., a non-profit organisation dedicated to expanding cycling services both on campus and in the communities of Champaign and Urbana.
At this moment we are working on an automated free bike distribution system at one of the University Residence Halls that should launch in August. In addition to expanding that service, we also are interested in setting up a bike co-op where people can come and work on their bikes; sharing access to tools, workspace, spare parts and creativity.
ABOUT THE INDEPENDENT MEDIA CENTER
Last year the IMC purchased the downtown Urbana post office building and has been converting it into a community media & arts center. The center includes a performance stage, radio station, production studios, art studios, wood and silkscreening shops, library, knitting shop, and we are working on a coffee shop. The IMC has a key space for a future community bike co-op.
If you can't come but want to stay in the loop OR you can donate money, bikes, or tools, e-mail: illinibicycleproject (at) gmail.com. |
This is a brilliant idea, and I'm so glad to see you give it a go! So, you have to have an I-card (be a student)? And, don't most students already have their own bikes? I'd say the percentage of students that have their own bikes is probably much higher than the general pop' of CU. It'll still be fun to watch this project unfold. Good luck! |
A link off'a the IBP page is abso-f*cking-lutely fascinating - http://bike.hampshire.edu/development/summary/ A really enjoyable read!
And, FWIW, there's something "hanging" on the IBP page, maybe javascript. It's nearly impossible to view/navigate, and practically crashed my browser. |
In Amsterdam Holland a 'White Bike' program has been very successful since the '60s. Free bikes are painted white and left around the city for anyone to use at any time. All a user has to do is leave the bike in a public place for someone else to use.
So, where to get the free bikes? both the CPD and UPD has many of bikes left over from their yearly auctions. What do they do with them? Destroy them? Junk them? Why don't they give them to a free bike program? |
sorry can't be at the meeting but thought of an idea to "sponsor" a bike...can I do that? I have a shop that revolves around recycling and thought it would be fun to give you all some support and $$ since I like the idea! |
Urbana PD does have a free bike program. Unclaimed bikes are given to Empty Tomb to be distributed to anyone who wants one. Perhaps Danielle can discuss your White Bike idea with the police department. |
