Illinois Native Dies In Kuwait

FORT RUCKER, Ala. (AP) -- An Illinois native based at Fort Rucker died Wednesday night in Kuwait after being hospitalized with breathing difficulties, Army officials said Friday.

Spc. Cory A. Hubbell, 20, of Urbana, Ill., was hospitalized Wednesday evening at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait, where he later died, an Army statement said.

His death is under investigation. Details were not immediately available.

"Cory was a very friendly, likable young man who looked at the Army as personal development and training, and also as service to his country," said Sam Furrer, Hubbell's counselor at Urbana High School in Illinois.

Hubbell was a carpentry and masonry specialist with B Company, 46th Engineer Battalion based at Fort Rucker in southeast Alabama. His unit deployed for Kuwait on Feb. 10.

Hubbell enlisted in 2001 after graduating from Urbana High School. He attended basic training and combat engineering training at Fort Leonard, Mo., and came to Fort Rucker in November 2001.

"He wasn't one of those kids who went into the service for money to go to college, he looked at it as a way to gain some skills and a trade and go on from there," Furrer said.

During his two years of service, Hubbell was awarded the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.

"He had a lot of friends and no real enemies and he'll be sorely missed by family and friends and I'm sure by his fellow soldiers," Furrer said.

His unit has scheduled a memorial service for Saturday at Camp Arifjan.
