Community Members outraged by the "Honor the Chief" campaign. Current rating: 0
20 Jun 2001
Have you all noticed the billboards around U-C reading, "Honor the Chief"?
Some community members are planning a response.
Find out more at: http://urbana.indymedia.org
I recently received several e-mails about responding to the "Honor the Chief" campaign -- here they are:

FIRST E-MAIL:

Hi all:
Have you all noticed the billboards around U-C reading, "Honor the Chief"?

[Check the web site: http://www.honorthechief.org/ The site is hosted by
shout.net & the phone number on the site belongs to Jean M Edwards, 1506
Theodore Dr, Champaign, IL 61821.]

I don't know who all's contributing to this expensive campaign, but I think
it's time for a guerilla-type response. A stealthy deluge of anti-chief
'tags' around town would be perfect. With heavy saturation, a tagging
campaign might even warrant a journalistic inquiry, stirring the pot and
furthering the cause.

[By the way, this kind of sticker campaign is not without historical
precedent. The Holocaust Museum in DC has in its collection a sheet of
anti-nazi stickers -- ~24 up on a page -- surreptitiously posted by
activists in German trains.]

******* and I will work on designing tags and making them available, but we'd
like you all to help us brainstorm slogans for the tags.

--------------------
Here's my first round:

"Honor the Chief, Honor Racism"

"Honor the Chief & Denigrate People"

"Honor the Chief? Disgrace the University"
----------------------

(Of course the slogans don't need to respond quite so directly to the Honor
the Chief campaign.)

Ideas?
Please post to 'all' -- your ideas may spur someone else's.

And feel free to share this call-to-action with sympathizers.

thanks

SECOND E-MAIL:

I think this is a great idea, and I like your slogans.

I would like to suggest doing this in a way that doesn't vandalize property.
Otherwise you risk hardening the hearts of those you want to persuade.

Two suggestions :

-- make stickers that have a Post-It-like adhesive quality

-- make stencils that could be used with spray chalk (like that
used for marking roads)

How about "Honor the Chief and the Tradition for which He Stands, the Tradition of White People Ignoring the Wishes of Native Americans."

Good ideas, Sascha!

How 'bout "honor the chief - give him a proper burial" ?

I just want to make clear that these are not my ideas, I'm just posting comments that I have received about this issue. The Urbana-Champaign IMC website does not log IP addresses, as such, if anyone else would like to post comments, one can do so anonymously by clicking the "add your comments" link at the bottom of the page.

Also, please remember that neither I nor the IMC are endorsing the tactics discussed, we're simply reporting on a story that otherwise would not be covered.

That said, here is another comment I received about this issue:

hey sascha,

here are some more ideas for anti-chief posters:

"Who are you honoring?"
image: picture of university chancellor/president with chief feather head-dress, football jersey, and fistfulls of money photoshopped on. or maybe instead of the chancellor, the monopoly guy.

"Honor the chief, and the tradition of racial insensitivity"
image: collage of porky pig as mr motto (a parody of the racist Mr. Moto movies in the 30's and 40's), some old black-faced, white actor from long ago, depicting a black person doing some kind of demeaning job, the chief, and maybe some other pictures.

"Honor the chief, and the tradition of disregarding minority voices"
image: chief?

"What do these people have to do with college sports?"
image: pictures of actual chiefs

"Honor the chief, Enjoy your Coke!"
image: picture of someone holding up a coke can and a thumbs up sign, wearing chief feathers.

Honor the chief, and the tradition of confusing petty marketting schemes for cultural icons"
image: maybe the same picture from the 'who are you honoring?' one.
