Picket Of Senator Winkel's Office To Demand YES Vote On Contraceptive Coverage Legislation Current rating: 3
09 May 2003
The Women's Health Task Force - a coalition of over 30 local organizations - is holding a picket of Senator Winkel's District Office on Monday, May 12th to demand that he vote YES on legislation that would require Illinois health insurance plans to cover prescription contraception (birth control).
Next week, the Illinois Senate will vote on HB 211- Contraceptive Equity in Health Insurance, which if passed would require Illinois health insurnace plans that cover prescriptions to cover prescription contraceptives (which are currently excluded from many plans with prescription coverage).

The vote in the Senate will be very close. Our Senator, Mr. Rick Winkel, has not yet declared his support for the legislation. He is being heavily lobbied by Provena Covenant Medical Center and the Catholic Conference (lobbyists for Catholic corporations) to oppose the legislation.

It is yet to be determined whether he'll vote to represent the interests of his constituents who overwhelmingly favor this bill, or to represent the monied interests on his back to oppose it. Come to the picket to help Senator Winkel make the right decision.

If you cannot make the picket, or if you'd like to help out further, please contact Senator Winkel and tell him you support HB 211: (217) 328-0400 or rickwinkel (at) rickwinkel.com (please copy brooke (at) shout.net).

Here's an unorthodox idea for you folks. Why not pay for Birth Control items yourself. I realize this is a foreign concept for all of you, but think of it you could rely only on yourself for the things that you need and want.

Clearly from a pure genetic standpoint, it does make some sense for people of the left to avoid procreation whenever, possible.
