Campus unions and community supporters plan to rally at Noon on the Quad, declaring: May Day for Health Care!
Immigrant groups and supporters will participate and then immediately head over to Congressman Tim Johnson's office for a rally there in support of the DREAM Act and against HR 4437. |
Declaring "May Day for Health Care!" the GEO (campus grad TAs), IATSE (stagehands) and Champaign County Health Care Consumers will rally with Jobs With Justice on Monday May 1 from at 12 noon on the UIUC Quad (by the Illini Union).
They will be joined by La Colectiva and immigrant rights activists, who are holding their own rally in support of the DREAM Act immediately following the health care event. The two groups are working together and planned the events so as not to conflict.
Both the GEO and IATSE are negotiating with the university for quality health care for their members. Immigrants are fighting for health care among other basic civil and human rights. All the groups believe that everybody deserves good health care.
"El Pueblo Unido"
Building on the overwhelming success of the April 10 march and rally, which drew more than 1000 C-U area residents in support of immigrant rights, La Colectiva and other groups now join another national day of action for "earned legalization, equal opportunity in education, equal labor rights, family reunification and a pathway to citizenship."
The local rally will be Monday May 1 at US Rep. Tim Johnson’s office, 2004 Fox Drive, Champaign.
Supporters who are already on campus should meet at 1pm – Union, circle drive (Transportation will be provided). Community members who wish to join the rally at Johnson's office should go directly there at 1:30pm.
"Johnson voted in favor of HR 4437," say the organizers. "Now we demand that he answer to the immigrant community!" |

What: Press Conference at Rep.Tim Johnson's office
When: Monday May 1 st
Why: Over 1,000 community members, students and allies marched on April 10th here in CU to denounce H.R. 4437 and the scapegoating of the undocumented community, and in unity voiced their support for true immigration reform.
In response Rep. Johnson issued a statement, stating:
"On this subject, I make no apologies for my vote last December on the Border Security Act. We must protect those borders. We must stem the flow of illegal aliens first and foremost before we begin the task of addressing other elements of immigration reform. The House has done its job and now it is up to the Senate to act.
People across the District are angry about this. I encounter the issue at every stop, every meeting, every day, it seems. Citizens are losing their jobs, our social service systems are overburdened, people attempting citizenship through legal channels are especially infuriated. Above all, citizens are angry that people from another country presume a right to this rare privilege of American citizenship."
Rep. Johnson not only continues to disregard the requests of the community it is his duty to represent, but further, his statements are an insult and injury to the community. The scapegoating of undocumented immigrants is dishonest and shameful. We must hold him accountable for his statements and for his actions.
Time: 1pm- We will gather at Circle Dr. in front of Illini Union.
Transportation will be provided. We ask people with cars to bring them as well. |
