Anti-War Activists: Support Local Businesses That Speak Out Against War! . Current rating: 12

French or Freedom Roast?: Local anti-war activists urged to put their money where their mouths are.
Dear Anti-War activist,

Caffe Paradiso is locally owned, run by a dynamic woman, uber respectful to their employees, so supportive of community groups, brightly adorned, unfailingly friendly and funky and cozy co-ZY. It features the artwork of local artists, the music of local musicians, and -- seriously -- the most zen women's bathroom this side of Tibet, crafted by cafe employees (the guys' is staff-made too, and also quite special). It serves excellent coffee and froo froo drinks for those who go that way, hearty rustic sandwiches, salads, and homemade pasta salads and soups, with breads and decadent sweets bought from local bakeries (Mirabelle, Sweet Betsy's, Sweet Indulgences), and produce purchased from a local organic farm (Blue Moon). They're just so good, those Para folk.

As if you need any further reason, please support Caffe Paradiso on the corner of Nevada and Lincoln in Urbana because it boldly speaks out against the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The Cafe has a whole chalkboard devoted to anti-war literature, signs, and other random material for public perusal. i was just there for coffee this afternoon, and realized that their willingness to do this is so awesome.

In these scared-as-shit-so-don't-wanna-stick-my-neck-out times, this sort of statement by a business really, REALLY deserves affirmation.

Our nation's current political climate forces a businesses' decision to support an anti-war platform to have well-publicized, deliterious economic implications. Please let Caffe Paradiso know that their willingness to make a statement against the war matters to you, and means a lot to us as a community. And back their bravery with your buck. Drink coffee? Like food? Go out of your way to get your fix from Paradiso. They're going way out of their way to support the anti-war effort.

Please email names and locations of other local actively peaceful establishments (like Paradiso and the UC IMC) to arickman (at) prairienet.org

Spread the word. And please support those in our community who boldly speak out for peace.

Dear Aimee,

I can't wait to tell my friends and business associates about this place. I am surprised that a non government entity is still operating in Urbana. Do they share all the profits with the workers, like you guys advocate? Do they provide health care and 401K benefits to all of their employees? Caffe Paradiso, I have to remember to tell all of my friends about this place and unlike you, I have many.

Your good friend Jack,

Actually, I understand that Paradiso actually does offer health benefits to their employees. And, as a result, it's a successful and very cool cafe.
The Real Questions Jack Should Answer

Since Jack is bringing up these important issues, it is curious that he asks about whether others offer health benefits and 401k's to their employees without explicitly stating whether or not he does so himself. Jack has represented himself as a small businessman, but he has also been shown to stretch the truth, OK, just flat-out lie about himself (see http://www.ucimc.org/newswire/display_any/10565 ).

So I gotta ask about this even though I kind of doubt that Jack actually owns anything but a lot of time on his hands to use to read and then troll Indymedia and he'll probably just tell us some more lies.

Jack, do you offer health care and 401k to your employees?

And don't give us some sort of dodge, like they're "independent contractors," either.

Which business do you run, so that I can be sure I don't spend any of my money there?

Or are you too chickenshit and afraid all the pro-peace people that you like to pretend don't exist will not do business with you anymore, hurting your profits?

At least Mark Thompson has the guts to publicly show where he stands. I've done business with him in the past and may do so in the future, although he's wrong about some of what he's been saying about why people show up to protest Bush's War for Re-Election. He at least earns my respect for speaking his mind, without trying to dodge the heat he may take for doing so.

That is the opposite of the case with you who, between insults, have said very little that couldn't be heard in the halls of a junior high. Just for you, Jack, I would lead a boycott, so let us know what the name of your business is so that we can verify your claims about the status of your employee benefits and let people know where people who care about peace, and real dialogue, can avoid spending our money.

Or are you just the "keyboard commando" you've been shown to be here on UC IMC?

RightOn! Excellent and appropriate post and concept. 'Course you could be cynical and see this as just another way to "target market", but it sure sounds like they're some righteous folks all around, and were well before W's war games started up.

And can we please just stop worrying or talking about "Jack". Any attention at all, is exactly his goal.

I personally don't need to disprove or expose anything about him - his behavior to date tells me everything I already need to know. I'm through (even thinking about him), and I urge everyone else to make the same effort.

The anti-war sentiment at Paradiso is genuine. Yet, the customers don't stay away, and I doubt this is just because of the fantastic homemade soup. Maybe more bussinesses should try this approach? It might be a whole new model for success.

*,

It grows tiresome to respond to you, because you simply run to the next post. Alas, here it goes? My company offers a complete benefit plan, 401K, ESOP options, and an Employee Assistance Program. This program offers services to our employees who may be going through a difficult period. I sense that your recent failure to bolster Saddam Hussein has left you sort of glum. You really ought to look into who in the private sector might be willing to pay for these services for yourself.

Indeed I do a tremendous amount of buiness in Urbana, and it simply would not be good business for me to release any further information or invite a boycott by you and your unpatriotic friends. I have employee jobs to protect as well as the protection of my share-holders. Until then, I guess I will just have to continue accepting exhorbitant fees for our products and services.

As for the truth, I have offered to meet with your organization at a place of their choosing. I guess, in the words of Jack Nickleson "YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH".

Dammit, I see our favorite troll hasn't found anything else to do with his sad life yet. You are my favorite punching-bag though, "Jack". And I couldn't feel less guilty for kicking at you - you've begged for every bit of it.

Why doesn't someone arrange to meet the pr*ck known as "Jack" just to determine who he is? I doubt anything he claims is true, but rather just more of his delusions. I'd like to know if the moron really runs a business or not. My suspicion is that it's just another facet of the fantasy world he lives in.

Wait a minute, this "proving" isn't on his terms. You can provide your answers right here Jack, and never even have to apply for permission to leave the asylum for an hour.

Why don't you fess up "Jack". Let us confirm your military service, or business ownership? It might even gain you a molecule or two of respect, 'cause you know Loser, right now you couldn't have any less. "The Laughingstock of the UCIMC". You worked hard for that title, and deserve every letter of it. What a living joke you really are.

My prediction is that your "offers" of a meeting are just more of your childish B.S., and you wouldn't even show up, or would send someone else. So bring official proof of who you are, and that you're "Jack". You'd probably better bring the Pope to vouch for your identity/claims, or there'd be no reason to believe any of the manure that flows outta your head.

Come on boy, tell us what your business is, and who you are. If your constant pompous claims/opinions are true, then they should hold up just fine even when your identity is known. Come on Fraud, you bear the burden of proof, who are you and what is your business? Haven't you noticed that the primary UCIMC members have no need to hide their identities? What's up with you, Coward?

I doubt we'll see/hear anything substantial other than more of his bellowing on these pages, though. That's his only ability - talkin' smack.

we've much more important things to do than to give our energy to someone who wants to divert our attention through petty personal insults and fights. let pro-war/anti-peace/pro-status quo/anti-war/pro-peace mean folk do what they want to do on this site. let them talk their smack. meanness deserves no effort back. meanness cares less for peopel, for politics, for justice, for community. unlike our military attacks of late, we have a choice to not have to recognize and affirm hostile aggression with response. we have much better places to put our creativity, to put our minds, to put our words, to put our actions than in negative, hateful places like those that mean trollers want to drag us to.
right now, we need to support and give attention and effort to the things that are hopeful. to each other. it's what's deserving. these places and people need us, and they're what we need most too.

peace, y'all.

Anon,

I am too tired for insulting you and it's too easy. I was at the Pro-America Rally today. Where were you? I think your crowd is getting a little smaller. NAME THE TIME, THE PLACE, BRING AS MANY OF YOUR TWO OR THREE FRIENDS AS YOU WOULD LIKE AND I WILL BE THERE. If it's not too much trouble, I would prefer a weekend as I have a company to run.

Let's see if you're man enough now,

Jack

Anon,

I have not heard from you yet. I am sure you are in the corner of your one bedroom apartment in the fetal position with your thumb in your mouth or other places crying for Mommy. Name the place dude. I would really appreciate the opportunity to show you my views in person.

Anon, Anon, Anon,

Where is Anon. He challenged me and then silence. He called me out and referred to me as a coward. It has been 4 or 5 days bud. Where are you? I will wait until you change your pants.

Looking forward to meeting you,

Jack

Sleep well.

Anon Lives,

We have already met? Let's see, I don't traditionally hang out at grade school playgrounds like you, or in bathhouses, You may have guessed that I was not at your flag burning rally so, I can't for the life of me figure it out.

If we do cross paths, please identify yourself. I think I would like to meet you even more than some of the naked babes in the snow. No, Just Kidding.

Jack
