A couple pictures showing the crowds this evening in Champaign. I hear that the noon-time rallies near campus were significantly larger. This evening's rally lasted until 9 pm. Tune in to WEFT 90.1 FM, Champaign for announcements of future rally times & locations. |
Hundreds At Evening Peace Rally In Champaign |
I arrived late for the rally that began at 5 pm, and when I got there this was the first thing I saw:

And just a few minutes later another large group with a police escort came marching down University Avenue.

Finally, a couple pro-war/bush demonstrators drove up for some friendly dialogue.

You flock like Lemmings,
We have lost 4 people at this moment. They gave their lives so you could go out and protest. You notice, that know candle light vigils have taken place in Iraq to this point.
Why??? Because they would be shot in the head.
THANKS TO OUR TROOPS AND GOD BLESS AMERICA,

What, Brits don't count?
There were 16 soldiers killed today. We are truly sorry that this happened. We do not want them there, and we certainly don't wish them harm. There was also at least 1 Iraqi casualty as a result of the assault on Baghdad last night.

Dear John,
Actually, the Brits are our best friends. I am truely sorry for their deaths during a helicopter crash in Kuwait. My prayers are with their families.
As for the Iraqi death, had they surrendered or followed the 1991 cease fire agreement, none of these deaths would have occurred. Had the world remained united, we could have avoided this war.
Do you wonder why we have not employed the "shock and awe" strategy at this point? It is because of our concern for life.
Keep your eyes open for the crowds during the liberation. Notice the love for freedom on the faces of the crowds. You will then realize how wrong you were to oppose this action. Will you be man enough to admit it?
Think about it,
Jack |

You pretty much summed it up there... :)

The Daily Illini also had a lengthy story and some pictures of the mid-day pro-America/anti-war/pro-soldier/pro-civilian actions.

Incidentally, I'm impressed that Jack Ryan has access to the US battle plan. Poor little guy... |

Will somebody please explain the connection between Bush sending US soilders to die in Iraq and our democratic right to protest? This war won't hurt Saddam and it won't put an end to terrorism. This war will only hurt innocent people and increase deadly anti-US sentiment.

Sarah,
I think you have every right to protest. I think you and your compadres forget who gave you that right with their legs, arms, minds, and lives. If you need a reminder, check out your local graveyard, or better still, look at the crosses at Arlington. Each man there believed in a greater cause better than themselves.
You claim that this war won't hurt Saddam. Forgive me, but are you serious? This may well have already taken his life or seriously wounded the shit head. In any case, after two weeks or so, he will be out of power for good. The holocaust in Iraq will come to an end.
Secondly, you say this war will not put an end to terrorism and will only increase anti US sentiment.
I contend that it was our very weak response to terrorism that started under Carter in Iran, continued for a spell under Reagan in Lebanon and continued through Clinton and his retreat from Somalia. Reagan, took on Libya directly. They have learned to behave, have they not?
Usama Bin Laden sites our retreat from Somalia as his reason for attacking our embassies, the Cole and 9/11.
He particularly views Clinton's use of cruise missiles instead of troops as our lack of will.
Contrary to your belief, this war will free innocent people and will send a message to our adversaries that we mean business. Unlike you and the people that hold the signs, they understand strength. We will crush them and free the slaves under their control. This is why we are right and you have failed to understand.
You ask questions rather than condemn, there is hope for you.
Keep Asking Questions,
Jack
