The Campaign for Access to Emergency Contraception of Champaign, IL, will be hosting the Great EC Giveaway this Saturday, November 5th from 1pm to 3pm. This event will be held at the Illinois Disciples Foundation – 610 E. Springfield Ave.., Champaign (NW corner of Springfield Ave. and Wright Street).
The Campaign has teamed up with Planned Parenthood of East-Central Illinois and the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District for this event.
Emergency contraception (EC) is a special dose of ordinary birth control that can prevent pregnancy if taken within 120 hours of unprotected sex, contraceptive failure, or sexual assault. EC has no effect if a woman is already pregnant, and does not cause an abortion. EC is more effective the sooner it is taken, usually within the first 24-72 hours, and therefore it is essential that women have timely access to this important medication. To obtain EC a woman must currently have a prescription from her physician. However, many women cannot schedule or afford a doctor’s visit to get the drug in time for it to be effective. In addition, many pharmacies do not stock, or refuse to fill, prescriptions for EC, making it even more difficult for women to get EC in many communities. Many women get EC ahead of time and keep it on hand in case of an emergency.
There will be physicians and licensed nurse practitioners at the event speaking with all women interested in getting EC, and all services will be completely free of charge. The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District will also be providing confidential testing for some sexually transmitted infections.
The Campaign for Access to Emergency Contraception works at the local, state, and national level to increase access to and awareness of EC. Currently the Campaign is fighting for access to EC in Illinois at the pharmacy level, as well as fighting for over-the-counter approval of Plan B (the brand name of EC).
