The Progressive Resource/Action Cooperative (PRC) will sponsor a Women Against War Rally on Friday, March 7, at Noon on the South Patio of the University of Illinois student union. The rally will coincide with International Women's Day (Saturday, March 8) and participants will stand in solidarity with women's organizations across the country that will use this day to speak out against a war on Iraq. People of all genders are invited to attend.
Speakers for the event include Assata Zerai, UI professor in Afro American Studies, Kathie Spegal of Planned Parenthood of East Central Illinois, Kathy Sims, Director of the Center for Women in Transition, Mona Haggag of the UI Muslim Students Association, and Brooke Anderson of the PRC. The rally will give voice to the unique perspective of women on war and will highlight the following aspects of the pending war on Iraq:
-The impact of a war on the women and children of Iraq,
who already face widespread poverty and medical crises,
in part due to US sanctions on Iraq.
-The disproportionate impact of domestic funding cuts
as a result of the expenses of war on women, especially
poor women and women of color, and children.
-The powerful role of women in social justice movements
throughout history, and the need for uniquely feminist
analyses of war and violence.
Participants will also call on all women legislators to take a strong and active stance against the war on Iraq.
Many women's groups will sponsor this event, including: 85% Coalition, Baker Board Ministry with Women, Champaign County National Organization for Women, Feminist Majority,
GirlZone, Parkland College Office of Women's Programs, Sisternet, UI Office of Women's Programs, University YWCA, Women Against Racism, Women Rising in Resistance, Women's Direct Action Collective, and Women's Health Task Force.

Now this is truly exciting. Are you ladies going to all get naked at this event too? I know Kathy Spegal and I would advise against it. It is interesting that Planned Parenthood would be there. Since when did they care about life? Perhaps all this war news is preventing unwanted pregnancies and therefore hurting revenue dollars.
Perhaps Jack Ryan should make an appearance. Do I get to speak? I would love too. Let me know.

Sarah,
You mentioned that all genders were welcome. How many are there?
Just Curious,

It seems the latest argument against the war, now seems to be that valuable resources will go to the war effort as opposed to women, children, and people of color.
How about we promise to continue to support the welfare mothers and everyone else mentioned with government handouts in exchange for your silence. Maybe we could sweeten the pot by doubling the food stamps and allowing you to by as many lottery tickets with them as you please.
Let me know,
Jack |
