Numbering around 60 people, community members and EIU Students held marches originating from different points and converging at Old Main today March 1 at Noon. The marches, rally and protests were to draw public awareness to the opposition to the possibity of a pre-emtive war against IRAQ! |
|
At the rally several speakers voiced their opposition to war, concern for the reduction of civil liberties, and called for a focus on justice instead of death and destruction.
Several counter-protesters joined the group and contemplated taking over the microphone. They were suprised
when anti-war protesters joined hands with them during
part of the rally. Those driving by in cars gave various
responses to the no-war signs. These included honks of
encouragement as well as admonitions to "nuke them all" and
to "go home".
Overall it was a precedent setting event as a radical force
for peace with justice emerged from the sleepy Charleston
and Mattoon Communities. This march originated from Coles County residents who participated in the Fellowship of Reconciliation's training in Champaign-Urbana just one week ago.
Protestors will continue to vigil each Monday at 5pm in
front of Old Main in Charleston.
Spread the peace! You never know what spark your
small act of resistance will ignite!
