The Vietnam counterculture rock festival was known as Kickapoo Creek has been made into a documentary that will air on the U of I campus at Lincoln Hall Theater on Monday night. The film features never seen before footage of the student protest in May of 1970 when student protesters shut down the university and the Illinois State National Guard had to take it back.
The festival took place on Memorial Day in 1970 in the small town of Heyworth, Illinois. "It was the day 60,000 hippies came to town," Raycraft said. After speaking to the Heyworth residents, he is aware of the chaos and fear this provoked. "People boarded up their homes and locked up their children. " Raycraft added.
Featured acts included BB KING, CANNED HEAT, COUNTRY JOE & the FISH, BUTTERFIELD BLUES BAND, TED NUGENT and the AMBOY DUKES and 60 other bands including local bands REO SPEEDWAGON and the FINCHLEY BOYS.
The director will be at the screening and there will be an open mic for questions regarding the film and the anti-war protests on campus in 1970. |
