As I understand it, newly elected governor Rod Blagojevich is expected to fill two trustee positions to the University of Illinois this spring. I would imagine that this will cause the Chief Illiniwek situation to flare up again. I would like to offer a solution to this often confrontational dispute that has gripped the Champaign-Urbana community for over 10 years. I sincerely believe that my solution would be a satisfactory way for the university to maintain possession of a strong inspirational sports mascot that would receive approval by the entire community.
I recommend that the Illinois "Fighting Illini" become the Illinois "Fire Fighters". "Chief Illiniwek" would be replaced with the "Fire Chief". In this way, sports fans can honor real heroes who deserve real recognition rather than continue to honor a fictional character who seems to inspire a modern trail of tears. I believe that this brand new representative of the university would be given a very warm reception by enthusiastic audiences everywhere.
As a postscript, I recommend you listen to a song on Tom Paxton's brand new CD---"The Bravest". This song honors the fire fighters of 9-11 & it is guaranteed to bring tears to your eyes regardless of your political persuasion. |
