Repeated calls to war go unbalanced in our "local independent newspaper". |
The News-Gazette ran the following opinion pieces on the subject of Iraq in the past few days:
Wednesday, August 21
1) Bush Shouldn't Wait Long to Take Out Saddam Hussein by Cal Thomas.
2) Why Wait for Iraq to Attack? by Walter Williams.
Tuesday, August 20
1) Bush Needs to Make Case for War with Iraq by Martin Kondracke.
2) Ouster of Saddam is Tough Sell for Bush by Tom Raum.
Friday, August 16
More than Enough Evidence to Justify War with Iraq by Michael Kelly.
Should we congratulate the editors for their consistency? The score is 5-0. As far as any News-Gazette reader knows, there is no reason *not* to go to war with Iraq. (Tuesday's pieces quote a single sentence from Brent Scowcroft, who opposes the war, but the remainder are about political strategy and how to ensure that every American supports the war.)
Let's all get together and celebrate the Independent Newspaper!

Enron Hides
Also in today's paper, news of the first conviction in the Enron bankruptcy (which has close ties to the Gazette's endorsed candidate, GWB), barely made it into the business section. The brief note, "Former Enron Executive Pleads Guilty" appeared down in the corner on page C-7. |

V. worthwhile to point up the one-sidedness of the N-G's commentaries, as well as its obfuscation of important economic news. A regular column of criticism of the local media would help to show why people around us believe so many fantastic things about the political and social world. They're not stupid, but they are subject to the world's best PR operation, the corporate media. |
