Champaign, Ill. – The AFL-CIO of Champaign County’s annual Labor Day Celebration has been set for Monday, September 2, 2002, at West Side Park in Champaign. The public is invited to join in the festivities, which will include a parade, food, games, and a special band, to honor the working men and women of this county.

Over 20 local unions and many other local organizations will be participating in the Labor Day Parade. There will be union floats; high school bands from Champaign, Urbana and Rantoul; clowns; various union company vehicles; and union members and their families marching in the parade. Bill Bland, IBEW Local 601, former Labor Liaison, and past Mayor of Champaign, will be the Parade Grand Marshall.

The parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Central High School’s main parking lot. The parade route will travel east on Park Avenue, south on Elm along West Side Park, east on University Avenue, four blocks south on State Street, east on Healey Street, north on Randolph Street, and west on Church Street back along the park to Lynn Street.

Following the parade, free inflatable games will be available for children of all ages from 11:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. IBEW Local 51 and Illinois Power will provide free bucket rides on their utility trucks. A tent will be set up for people to sit and listen to the Prairie Dogs blue grass band from noon to 3:30 p.m. Food vendors will be selling barbeque ribs, chicken, sandwiches, pizza, and drinks, and raffle drawings will be held hourly for special prizes.

The public is invited to enjoy the parade and other activities planned for Labor Day in West Side Park. Attendees are asked to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets for seating.

A special dedication ceremony for the newly built Workers’ Memorial will be held after the celebration at 5:00 p.m. at Dodd’s Park, Champaign. Senator Dick Durbin, Congressman Tim Johnson, and other state and local leaders will be participating in the dedication and Labor Day celebration. The memorial is located just north of the Olympic Tribute.
