Radio Free Urbana will be going on the air by June 19. It is now time for volunteers who want to produce shows on WRFU to step forward with their program proposals and for required training. You can do both at a special WRFU meeting on Saturday, April 9 from 2 to 4pm at the IMC, 218 West Main St. in downtown Urbana. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Local programming on WRFU is created by self-selected programming groups of at least two people, so bring a friend or come to the meeting with your ideas to find others who you may want to form a programming group with. Membership in WRFU is only $10 a year. WRFU members who go on the air must also be IMC members ($25 to $50/year, sliding scale, but the IMC portion of the membership fee can be waived for financial need.)

A schedule of the meeting will be posted here later as a comment. This is the first meeting for programming groups to form and submit a proposed schedule. The meeting will also complete part of the required training before groups can go on the air with their shows. The structure and internal procedures of WRFU will be explained, FCC regulations reviewed, and some basics of programming techniques will be covered. Hands-on equipment training will begin in mid-May as the station is constructed.

WRFU's mission statement is:
"WRFU is a progressive radio station collective committed to social justice, focusing on public affairs issues and the arts. WRFU airs opinions and debates in an open and diverse forum that focuses on educating and empowering the public. WRFU provides an accessible venue for an eclectic mixture of arts programming."

For more info on WRFU, visit our website at:
http://www.radiofreeurbana.org

Essentially, the programming your group does is up to you. It can be talk, music, or any combination -- it's up to you what you want to do. Over the last year since we were granted our construction permit, we have heard many great ideas for programs. Now is the time to put your ideas into action. This is your first opportunity to claim a Radio Free Urbana programming slot.

So far, WRFU has raised more than $10,000. The transmitter and other required equipment has been ordered and will be arriving shortly. Construction of the station will begin in May in order to meet the June 19 deadline for going on the air. We still need to fully equip the studio, but all the basics are in place.

For info on how you can donate to support Radio Free Urbana, including how to make an online donation via Paypal, go to:

This training and programming meeting will be repeated at least one more time before WRFU goes on the air in June, so if you are unable to attend, stay tuned for announcements of future dates to get involved or come to any regular WRFU meeting on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 8pm at the IMC. Programming group members must complete the required training prior to going on the air.
