Chynoweth Wins Ward 4 Democratic Primary In Landslide Current rating: 0
27 Feb 2001
Danielle Chynoweth won today's Urbana City Council Ward 4 Democratic Party primary election.
In a landslide victory, Danielle Chynoweth won Urbana's Ward 4 Democratic primary by a 61% to 39% landslide margin. This win, which virtually assures her victory in heavily Democratic Urbana's April general election, is an indication that a progressive politics that counts on mobilization of the voting public is a trend in the Champaign County political power structure.

Ms. Chynoweth won the primary by defeating her opponent, Carolyn Kearns, who was strongly backed by Urbana's current mayor, Tod Satterthwaite. Running on a campaign that was based on mobilizing a committed core of activists to reach out to Urbana's progressive and discerning electorate, Ms. Chynoweth thanked her supporters at a celebration at her home bordering Carle Park.

Declaring that she couldn't have won without the strong support of a campaign that involved over 100 citizens of all ages, Ms. Chynoweth reminded her supporters that the general election will need their full attention to be certain that the will of Urbana's progressive majority will be carried out.

Supporters were enthused that a candidate that they could "trust and count on" had managed to pull off an upset victory in the face of the opposition of the mayor. Looking toward the future, analysts hope that Ms. Chynoweth's victory will remind city government that Urbana's citizenry prides itself on their unique quality of life, in the face of the desire of some elements that desire to erase this choice by turning Urbana into a weak, dependent clone of the way things are done in Champaign.

Final Vote Numbers
Current rating: 0
28 Feb 2001
Danielle Chynoweth 244
Carolyn Kearns 154

Despite the fact that the Mayor and Danielle were campaigning almost all day (with Carolyn making an appearance for an hour or so) at FAR/PAR only 32 students voted. The breakdown of the student vote was 50/50 (16 for Chynoweth and 16 for Kearns).
