After waiting for up to 4 hours to go through security screenings, thousands of protestors gathered on Pennsylvania Avenue to welcome the President to his "mandated" second term.

The only permitted protest was sponsored by A.N.S.W.E.R., the anti-war and racism group. Nonetheless, protestors lined up and down the parade route, in some places facing police aggression.

Police presence among the A.N.S.W.E.R. gathering was heavy. Snipers were placed on top of buildings surrounding the A.N.S.W.E.R. stage, and at one point, a marching formation of police clad in riot gear walked into the middle of the group as the parent of a slain soldier was speaking out against continued violence.

Access to press resources was very restrictive. Despite credentialing from the UCIMC, we were unable to obtain access to media stands that were mostly empty (most major media were actually in the procession). The few "reporters" in the stands were military.

As the VP and President drove by, they enjoyed the sight of thousands of fingers. Some constituting peace signs, others demonstrations of frustration and repulsion. |
