Members of a Guatemalan Co-operative of Fair Trade Coffee Growers will speak Thursday, Sept 23rd, at 6pm at Common Ground Food Co-op about coffee: the plant, the industry and innovative alternatives to exploitative market practices. |
Rigoberto Augustin Ramirez and Roberto Ramirez Lainez, members of Santa
Anita la union in Colomba, Guatamala and the source of Common Ground Food
Co-op's Guatemalan coffee will be in Champaign on Thursday, Sept. 23rd.
Santa Anita is a collective of 33 families growing coffee, bananas,
avocadoes and community on 100 beautiful acres in the pacific coastal
mountains of Guatemala. They were able to acquire this land as a part of
the peace accords that ended the civil war there 6 years ago. Previous to
becoming coffee growers, this group fought for indigenous rights and land
reform.
Come meet Mr. Ramirez, Mr. Lainez, and Just Coffee coffee roasters as they
share their experiences building alternatives to exploitative market
conditions facing Third World farmers. They'll talk about coffee
production, show slides of their organic plantations, and answer questions you
may have about coffee. There will also be brewing up some delicious fair-trade
coffees for you to try! |

As a former member of CGFC (I've lived in CU for a dozen years or so but now reside out West), I have the most precious memories of the most excellent work CGFC does to promote the principles outlined in the above story. And my visits to CU (I visit there sometimes 3-4 times per year) are never complete without visiting CGFC.
I wish I was there to attend this event and to cook for the most delicious, warm, fun, and caring CGFC potlucks!
Good luck with the Guatemalan Coffee Growers event, and warm wishes for all your other events as well.
