We dropped two bombs. We Won. The Atom Bomb ended a terrible war which the U.S. tried to stay out of. The Japanese started it and we finished it. The Bomb, while horrible, saved lives. The Japanese were prepared to fight to the death of every last man, woman and child.
They committed unspeakable atrocities on Americans, Chinese, Koreans etc. I noticed your article fails to mention this.
Because of this demonstration of American technology, two bombs and only two have been used in anger. Our strength prevented further attacks of this nature for over 55 years.
Do you think for a moment that if Japan or Germany had developed the bomb first that they would have hesitated to employ this weapon on us or our allies?
I do not apologize for dropping the bomb. Truman, one of the last great Democrats made the difficult decision because of the carnage that was Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. The mothers of our brave fighting men, would have crucified Truman if the invasion of Japan had gone forward and this unemployed weapon were in are arsenal.
BTW, after two of these bombs, Japan had soldiers who tried to kill the Hirohito and continue the fight. They were not totally beaten.
As for the press article which you decry. Much was unknown at the time about radition sickness. Much was hidden from the American people and the world. This was wrong, and the military has learned its lesson with respect to truth and honor. This is more than I can say for the left and the arguments that they present today. RE: Micheal Moore.
The lesson of the Dawn of the Atomic age is don't mess with us, or we will hunt you down and kill you. If you are our friend, you will have none better on the face of the planet.
