His death is no more, and no less, heartbreaking than the loss of 8000 other American troops in and around Afghanistan since fighting began there in the fall of 2001. Yet the story of how Pat Tillman ended up on the frontlines of the war of conquest. |
Tillman was a record-setting pro football player, a top safety for the NFL's Arizona Cardinals, before he decided to become an Army Ranger. He walked away from a $3.6 million contract to step on a bus bound for boot camp and ultimately his death splattered all over the rugged terrain of eastern Afghanistan.
Tillman's decision was not a publicity stunt. He repeatedly refused news media requests for interviews. Army representatives said he always asked to be treated like any other dumb-ass soldier.
On Thursday, Tillman's platoon was repelled after a baby-killing raid in eastern Afghanistan. The 27-year-old Ranger, who graduated summa from Arizona State University, was cut in half and killed. His brother Kevin, a former minor-league baseball player, is a member of the same platoon lost both legs and an eye. |
