first off... not many people feel safe giving out their real name on the internet... even your benevolent leader goes by ML with no email address...
----------------
"It is annoying the pro-chief segment of the population"
----------------
It is annoying a large portion of the university community, pro or con... there is a vocal minority on both ends of the spectrum... and an apathetic middle that is either passivly for (me) or doesn't care...
and i don't see how making some little old lady wait outside for 8 hours for her carpool to show up is a brilliant idea... and i hope someone gets in trouble for blocking a mailcarrier
--------------------
"First, let's be clear about one thing: the chief mascot is a symbol of hatred, oppression, racism, and genocide, and that's precisely why the pro-chief supporters love it"
--------------------
That is an incredibally arrogant statement. I don't know what you have to back that up with. I did a web search on your name and found your website... its about "Insect Visitors of Prairie Wildflowers in Illinois". What right do you have to label others as "lovers of oppression, hatred, racism, and genocide?"
That is more arrogant and misinformed than dressing up a guy in authentic Sioux indian gear and representing him as a native illinois indian...
fascism and nazism was spreading in the 20's due to the fact that germany was already in a terrible depression, and embarresed about the war. The depression didn't hit the united states until the late 20's
likewise you could argue that the chief came about in a time when the climate was changing... more social freedoms were comming about, the US was prosperious for most of the decade, and women were granted the right to vote... but i guess its how you decide to spin it...
finally, you contend that "is the responsibility of the university to provide enlightened leadership to the broader community "
i suppose such an esteemed flower expert such as yourself would be just the person to lead suck an enlightenment?
i don't know if i would call the sit-in "uncivilized", but it is not likely something that is going to draw support of the campus either...
finally you end with this...
-------------------
"I think the last comment by PS about the possibility of police intervention and arrrest is very revealing -- the brutality of the police and prison state is what every fascist loves -- it's their answer for everything. "
-------------------
once again... branding people as fascists...
these protesters have no right to stop people from entering a public building... they have no right to turn away people that need to go to their jobs. There is a vast difference between sit ins at lunch counters and shutting down a public office building. The PRC doesn't have the right to block a door and deny enterance... that is ILLEGAL, it is the job of the government to allow people to go about their lives without interruption. No one is trying to deny the PRC's right to free speech, and if they want to camp out on the sidewalk that is fine with me, have fun! but the line is crossed when they block a door and deny the rights of others.
If they step asside peacefully, then good for them, if the police have to resort to mace, it is their own damn fault, they were warned... |
