TBILISI : Georgia's people overran parliament.
The people's leader Mikhail Saakashvili said Nino Burjanadze, speaker of parliament before the disputed November 2 general election, would replace Eduard Shevardnadze as president. |
The Georgian president's office said there had been a "coup d'etat" after the protesters, demanding the resignation of President Eduard Shevardnadze, overran the parliament building in the capital.
"A coup d'etat has occurred in Georgia," Shevardnadze's office said in a statement.
The statement came after protestors demanding Shevardnadze's resignation stormed parliament during an address by the Georgian leader as weeks of tension over a contested election boiled over.
Shevarnadze, surrounded by a phalanx of bodyguards, was whisked out of the building by a back door after demonstrators forced the door of the chamber and marched in, waving the red and white flags of their party.
Saturday's protests were the climax of three weeks of nearly daily rallies sparked by a November 2 general election that has been slammed by foreign governments and the Georgian opposition as rigged.
