Editor's Note: I wonder why the News-Gazette hasn't been keeping us appraised of the fact the "president" appears to be a blithering idiot. Surely the "idiot factor" looms as large as the idiot policies that are being pursued on his trip to Europe. He is doing a laughable job of representing the US, even if you are foolish enough to believe in his misguided approaches to public policy. |
Imagine a foreign head of state visiting the US in 1998, and accidentally referring to the then President as Mr. CLIT - NON.
Imagine a foreign head of state visiting the US in 1986, and accidentally referring to the then President as Mr. RAY-NUG. (Reagan).
Yet this is precisely what Bush did while visiting Spain. Canadian cable network News World International reported yesterday that G.W. Bush mispronounced the name of the Spanish head of State in a public speech.
Bush visited Spain first, for two reasons. First, he wanted to meet a conservative head of state. Spain is one of only a handful of Western European nations that do not have socialist, labor, or social democratic governments.
Second, he hoped to show off his \"near fluency\" in Spanish. Bad choice. Bush\'s Spanish is very poor, and he sounds very uneducated and even more ignorant than usual while speaking in Spanish, in part because of his Texas twang, in part because of his lack of any mastery of correct Spanish pronunciation, and lastly, because-- insofar as he is somewhat able to speak Spanish-- he tries to imitate a Latin American dialect, which is not very well respected in Spain, which still prides itself on the purity of the form of language spoken in \"Castellano\'s\" country of origin.
To make matters worse, when pronouncing the name of the current Spanish head of state, he said
AN-ZAR ,
instead of saying
AZ-NAR
which is like pronouncing our President\'s names:
KEDDENY
NINOX
EINESHOWER
WANISHTON
JESSERFUN
MASIDON, etc.
Bush probably spent a lot of time rehearsing his speech in Spanish, thought it did not show (He had trouble pronouncing the word travel--viajar--in the opening of his speech. He probably said over and over in his head (Aznar, Aznar, Aznar), but it came out AN-ZAR.
Imagine of foreign head of state coming to the US and calling our current head of state:
SHUB.
Bush could be excused if he did this sort of thing just once; but he does it time and time again.
