Read Across America is looking for volunteers to help with the upcoming event on Saturday March 4, 2006. Conflicting engagements concerning the usual group that supplies the bulk of volunteers has caused a significant decline in available bodies. The event runs from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Volunteers are needed for the following shifts: 9-1, 11-1 and 1-3. No individual will be turned away if they would like to work from 9-3 or any variation thereof. Volunteers are assigned to booths as they arrive for their shifts.
If you would like to be a part of this wonderful affair, please e-mail me at kwilson (at) champaign.org as soon as possible, as I promised I would ask for volunteers wherever I could.
Thank you, and below is a brief synopsis of the event.
'Read Across America is an annual educational event that is held at Lincoln Square. Children from toddlers to elementary school age come with their families for a day filled with fun educational activities. Last year more than 750 children attended this heart warming event and 24 organizations provided activities such as reading, storytelling, puppet making etc. Each child receives a free book of their choice and a free canvas tote bag. This is a nationwide event that started in commemoration of Dr. Seuss' birthday and is always held locally on the first Saturday in March.'
