VENUE: 192 Education Building [1310 S. Sixth Street, Champaign]
WHEN: Wednesday, October 26th, 2005 @ 7:00 PM
While soft-drink companies boast of their contributions to economic
progress and development in India, community members living near the giant
bottling plants are telling a different story. Severe water shortages
along with soil and groundwater pollution are threatening people's
livelihoods, and their lives.
Mehandiganj: Where Life is At Stake offers a view into one community's
struggles against a local Coca-Cola bottling plant and its destructive
environmental practices. The film highlights the courage and hope of the
local people, while leaving the viewer with a clear picture of the
violence and intimidation that Coca-Cola is willing to use to protect its
$4.8 billion in annual profits.
Runtime is approximately 36 minutes, and a question and answer session
will follow.
This event is free and open to all
Coalition Against Coke Contracts (CACC), is a broad coalition of campus
and community groups in Champaign-Urbana that has mobilized to demand that
the University cut its contract with Coke and divest from Coke since it
has repeatedly violated labor rights in Colombia, and is responsible for
severe environmental abuse in India.

It certainly makes ME tired just reading about it. Yes, the world is truly full of bad things and bad people, but how about spending more time doing good to your next door neighbor than looking for misery on the other side of the globe. |
