New Jail Phone Rates in Effect

The Champaign County Board has negotiated new jail phone rates with Evercom. These substantially lower rates are the results of the County Board directing the negotiating team to begin the negotiating process ELIMINATING the $14,000 montly compensation" / "kickback" that they had been receiving.

Community Meeting on Access to Emergency Contraception

ec1.jpgA community meeting was held on Access to Emergency Contraception (EC). Several speakers described EC and its availability at the local, state, and national level. The keynote speaker was Destiny Lopez, who focused on the campaign to make EC more available in New York City and the state of New York, and the attitudes Latinos often have toward EC.

Jail Phone Victory!

Advocates for eliminating the practice of Champaign County accepting a kickback from the jail phone provider saw victory Thursday night as the Champaign County Board voted to completely eliminate the “compensation.” Champaign County has been accepting compensation for their phone contract since at least 1998.

In Urbana, It's the Democratic primary, but it might as be the general election since there are few contested races in the general election.

In Champaign, there is only one name on the ballot and several write-ins.

URBANA
Mayor: Laurel Prussing v. Tod Satterthwaite v. Shirley Hersey
Ward 4: Brandon Bowersox v. Casey Diana
Ward 5: Dennis Roberts v. Ricky Baldwin
Ward 7: Lynn Barnes v. Durl Kruse

CHAMPAIGN
District 1: Gina Jackson

Satterthwaite Campaign Misleading Urbana

The Satterthwaite for Mayor campaign recently sent a postcard to registered voters in Urbana that has sparked a controversy over the accuracy of its claims. The card claims Satterthwaite was a strong supporter of the Urbana Free Library expansion project. Many others involved in that project, and documented facts concerning its history, contradict those claims.
