No more third Saturday protests after this weekend (Oct. 15, 6-8pm). See you on the first Saturday of every month from 2-4 pm (Nov. 5, Dec. 3, etc.). |
(Champaign) This Saturday October 15 will mark the last time local anti-war protesters will gather on the third Saturday of the month from 6-8 pm at One Main Plaza. Demonstrations against the war will continue on the first Saturday of every month from 2-4 pm at the same location. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Regular protests moved from Prospect Avenue to the corner of Main and Neil in Champaign earlier this year and until now have been held twice a month on the first and third Saturdays. But as the days grow shorter and the wind gets colder this time of year the Anti-War Anti-Racism Effort (AWARE), which organizes the regular Saturday demonstrations, has decided to call off the evening protests until further notice.
Response to the regular Saturday protests has been overwhelmingly positive as polls continue to show a growing majority of Americans oppose the war in Iraq. The death toll of US service personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan rises daily, as does the toll among Iraqi civilians. The Bush Administration has been on the defensive lately, insisting that its policy in Iraq is the only way.
But on Main Street Saturday October 1 the noise of enthusiastic honking from passersby was virtually constant. That protest was the first local demonstration following the national protest in DC that drew over 100,000.
About 100 area residents took two charter buses to DC for that march and others made their own way there. New faces have been showing up at AWARE meetings and events since then. AWARE meets every Sunday evening from 5-7pm at the Independent Media Center (also a post office) on the corner of Broadway and Elm in Urbana. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. |
