The Illinois Disciples Foundation (IDF) presents…
“The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”
Part of the 4th Annual Human Rights Film Series
Thursday, October 6th
7-9pm
First floor, IDF**
Free Admission and Snacks |
Each spring, the IDF hosts the Human Rights Film Series. Our series was so popular last spring, we decided to an additional series this fall. This second film in this fall's film series is “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.”
Hugo Chavez, elected president of Venezuela in 1998, is a colorful, unpredictable folks hero, beloved by his nation's working class and a tough-as-nails, quixotic opponent to the power structure that would see him deposed. Two independent filmmakers were inside the presidential palace on April 11, 2002, when he was forcibly removed from office. They were also present 48 hours later when, remarkably, he returned to power amid cheering aides. Their film records what was probably history's shortest-lived coup d'Ă©tat. It's a unique document about political muscle and an extraordinary portrait of the man The Wall Street Journal credits with making Venezuela "Washington's biggest Latin American headache after the old standby, Cuba."

The film will be shown with a projector and free snacks will be provided! Bob Naiman, a longtime activist in the Champaign-Urbana community, will be facilitating the discussion following the film. Bob is a graduate student in Economics at the University of Illinois. He is currently an active member of U of I’s Graduate Employees’ Organization (GEO). Before that, he worked with the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington, D.C.
Next in the fall's Human Rights Film Series, the IDF will show "Lost Boys of Sudan" on October 13th and "Operation: Veteran Freedom" on October 20th. The films will all begin at 7pm and will be shown at the Illinois Disciples Foundation.**
The Human Rights Film Series is cosponsored by: Activist Forum, Amnesty International #124, Anti-War Anti-Racism Effort (AWARE), Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Feminist Majority, La Casa Cultural Latina, McKinley Foundation, Progressive Resource/Action Cooperative (PRC), School for Designing a Society, Socialist Forum, South Asian Collective, Together Encouraging the Appreciation of Multiculturalism (TEAM), U-C Friends
