Richmond or Bust: Protest against the FCC |
RICHMOND OR BUST
FCC Chairman Michael Powell says it's more efficient for people to send their thoughts via e-mail, and the FCC doesn't need to do a "19th century whistle stop" tour of the country to hear what people think about media ownership. The Tribune Company, Clear Channel and the other media giants get in-person meetings. We think the people should be heard in person too!
We're taking a road trip to the one "official" FCC Hearing on Media Ownership rules in Richmond, VA on Thurs, Feb. 27. Media companies are pushing hard for the FCC to wrap up the giveaway of the public airwaves by spring. This is an absolutely critical time and place to show our opposition. If you can get away at all, please join us!
A demonstration is planned with a "Mad Scientist" theme. Powell has said they need "facts and data" and that people are getting too "emotional" about this, so we plan to dress up in lab coats, create visuals of this great media "experiment" and bring signs with the "facts" that are getting overlooked.
It is about a 13-hour drive from Chicago to Richmond. We plan to leave Wed. morning, Feb. 26 and return by morning, Fri, Feb. 28. Not sure yet if we're taking a van or a bus...depends on how many people we get. (Anybody got a van they'd like to drive?) Some people in Richmond have volunteered to put people up, subject to availability. The transportation will cost less than $100 per person.
There will be an event with speakers, bands, etc. Wed. night before the hearing. The hearing itself is 10A to 4P on Thurs, and is open to the public, first come first served.
Please let me know right away if you would like to come!
