Pauline Park, transgender activist in NYC, to speak at UIUC on Friday, Feb. 28. |
"MAKING UNIVERSITY POLICY TRANSGENDER-INCLUSIVE"
Friday, February 28th, 2003 Noon-1pm, Room 405, Illini Union
Pauline Park is a Korean American adoptee and transgender activist. Her activism has had groundbreaking results in policy protecting gender-variant people in New York City from discrimination. She has been a leader in racial/ethnic issues and gender identity/expression concerns. Park earned her Ph.D. in Political Science at UIUC and received a Fulbright fellowship for her dissertation research in France.
Following a brief presentation on transgender issues, Pauline Park will address questions about transgender-inclusive policies, relating her activism and advocacy work in New York to University non-discrimination policies that can ensure the full participation of transgendered and gender-variant people in the life of the University as faculty, staff, and students.
For those who may want a primer in transgender terminology/issues before Pauline Park's talk, there will be a student-run "Transgender 101" workshop sponsored by PRIDE <http://www.uipride.org> on Wednesday, Feb. 26th at 8pm in Room 405, Illini Union. Pauline Park is also giving a short keynote to kick off Asian American Awareness Month at We Be Jammin', an evening of APA student performances on Friday, Feb. 28, from 7-9pm in Knight Auditorium at the Spurlock Museum. She will also be a panelist addressing "Intersecting Identities: LGBT Asian Americans" at Unseen/Unheard, the annual Asian American student conference on Saturday, March 1. For more information, see <http://www.unseenunheard.com>.
Pauline Park's visit is sponsored by the Asian Pacific American Coalition and the Office for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Concerns.
