"Bon Voyage" to anti-war buses to DC Current rating: 0
21 Sep 2005
You and dozens of other local peaceniks will rally this Fri. Sept. 23 at 7pm in a jubilant sendoff for two busloads (full to overflowing) on their way to DC for Saturday's anti-war demos there.
(Urbana) Over a hundred local residents will be making their way to Washington this weekend to attend the first big national anti-war demonstration in months. Two buses chartered and organized by the Anti-War Anti-Racism Effort (AWARE) will depart this Friday, September 23, from the Urbana Independent Media Center, 202 S. Broadway Ave., Urbana, at 7:30 pm.

There will be a “Bon Voyage” rally starting at 7pm at the same location for local peacemakers who could not join the trip. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. We hope to get some media coverage, or at least film it for UPTV.

“The response has been overwhelming,” said Durl Kruse, main organizer of the bus trip. Kruse says AWARE first chartered one bus, but that filled up quickly. Now the group has filled a second bus, and there is a waiting list that is still growing.

“We are still getting two to three calls a day from people wanting to go,” Kruse said.

AWARE has also received almost $1000.00 in donations to help defer the cost for students and others who might not otherwise be able to afford to participate. A seat on the first bus cost $70 once the charter fees were divided up. That bus company was reportedly very supportive of the anti-war cause and willing to cut AWARE a good deal. The second bus was a bit more expensive at $92 a seat, which Kruse said did not change a single person’s mind about going.

Schedule for the bus trip:

Friday, September 23
*7:30 PM - Leave from Independent Media Center (IMC) - the Urbana Post Office
*Ride all night

Saturday, September 24
*8:00 AM - Arrive DC. Participate in full day of events (march and rally).
*7:30 PM - Back on the bus
*Ride all night

Sunday, September 25
*8:00 AM - arrive back at the IMC.
