Next week, February 18th, the IMC book club will be meeting and discussing Peter Singer's "A Darwinian Left". It's a nice short book (63 pages), so you could easily decide to participate right at the last minute!
Peter Singer is a controversial philosopher, for a number of reasons. His view of animal ethics helped spur the animal rights movement in the 1970s, and he also has advocated euthanasia for a wide variety of people, including severely disabled infants. Love him or hate him, he's an interesting thinker.
This book's main argument is that the political left needs to take evolution and Darwinism more seriously, and stop letting the right pretend that Darwin supports their neo-conservative agenda.

It should be available at local libraries and bookstores, and it's only ten bucks (brand new) if you buy it. We'll be meeting at 7pm at the IMC (218 W. Main St. in Urbana). Snacks and drinks will be provided. |
