A newly formed group called the Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice of Champaign County will meet with University of Illinois Chancellor Michael Aiken, Provost Richard Herman, and other administrators on June 5th to discuss labor issues at the university.
Steve Shoemaker, Executive Director of the University YMCA, stated that he was looking forward to "talking about the University's relation to organized labor [and was] pleased that the University was willing to talk with labor folks."
The Interfaith Committee is part of a national movement of religious, labor, and community leaders that is working to improve the wages, benefits and working conditions of workers and their families. A recent petition signed by over 130 community leaders asserts that the UI has used its legal, financial and political clout to undermine the democratic process of union organizing.
The petition asks the university to "refrain from activities which undermine the free choice of workers to join a union [and] to remember that bargaining with unions in good faith is not merely a legal requirement but also a moral imperative."
The university initially refused to meet with the pastors, fathers, and reverends from the Interfaith Committee, but committee members remain optimistic that their June 5th meeting will be constructive.
