Announcement :: Civil & Human Rights : Media
ALERT: Take 2 Minutes and Expand Low Power Radio in Congress and at the FCC! Current rating: 0
14 Sep 2005
Greetings from the Prometheus Radio Project!

We're writing you this quick note to let you know that because of your
organizing in your communities, city councils, and on Capitol Hill, a
bill was introduced in the House of Representatives this week to support
and expand Low Power FM radio! That bill is the Expand and Protect
Local Community Radio Act of 2005 -- HR 3731. WE NEED YOU to call your
Congressmember and ask them to cosponsor HR 3731, and bring Low Power FM
radio stations to the towns, schools, and community groups who need
them.

You have also convinced the Federal Communications Commission that
changes need to be made to the current rules governing low power radio
service so that it can continue to prosper and grow; now is the time to
tell the FCC how important local media is to communities all across the
country, and how you think the FCC can change the rules to facilitate
LPFM service! Public reply comments are due September 21st -- WE NEED
YOU TO make your voice heard!

ACT NOW ON LOW POWER RADIO LEGISLATION!

Louise Slaughter, D-NY, introduced "The Enhance and Protect Local
Community Radio Act of 2005" on Tuesday, September 13. It repeals the
law that restricted Low Power radio to the third-adjacent channel, and
would free up a significant number of frequencies on the dial for LPFM.
To celebrate and activate on this important bill, thousands of low power
radio supporters across the country will be calling their congresspeople
to tell them to support this legislation so critical to the future of
low power, community radio. Join the phone flurry!

To get your congressperson's phone number, visit
www.freepress.net/washington. Check out our website for more
information on this legislation, and for suggestions of what you can say
when calling your congressional office!

FCC SEEKS COMMENTS ON LOW POWER RADIO

There is still time to make your voice heard on the critical issues
facing low power radio service! The FCC is accepting public reply
comments on comments previously filed on the Notice of Proposed
Rulemaking on Docket 99-25, which created LPFM. The Proposed Rulemaking
takes up questions including the rules governing transfer of LPFM
licenses, Construction Permit durations, LPFM application windows, the
status of translator stations in relation to LPFM, and encroachment
issues. Changes in many of these regulations would expand and
facilitate low power radio service in communities nationwide.

Check out our website --
http://www.prometheusradio.org/comments_fcc.shtml -- for the some
suggestions to filing reply comments. You can file comments with the
FCC on our website as well, using our handy comment tool! It can take as
little as one minute flat, and you will join thousands of people across
the country in urging the FCC to take the crucial steps to expand and
support local, community-based media projects.

Organizations like Prometheus and our allies, as well as National Public
Radio and the National Association of Broadcasters, have already filed
comments; you can reply to support or oppose specific comments. This is
the most important opportunity for you to comment on the direction of
LPFM since the service was implemented 5 years ago. Comments WILL shape
the future of LPFM! Make your voice heard!

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, when radio has helped to save so many
lives, community radio stations have made a difference. Check out
http://www.prometheusradio.org/katrina to learn about LPFMs affected by
the hurricane and to see how LPFM is getting vital information to
displaced families.
