Home Rule Municipalities May Adopt Alternative Voting Systems |

Attorney General Lisa Madigan yesterday released a statement that pursuant to the Illinois Constitution, Home Rule municipalities in Illinois may adopt, by referendum, alternative voting systems such as Instant Run Off Voting for their local elections.
This clears the way for a referendum in Urbana to adopt a voting system that is more fair than first past the post. |

Mathematically, the most fair voting system available is known as Condorcet. It has the same user interface as Instant Run Off Voting (First vote for your favorite candidate, then vote for your second favorite candidate, etc) but the votes are counted differently. |
