The comment "Bug laden, garbage software marketed to the masses" comes off as trolling because it is completely unjustified (both in that post and in general). But in case it wasn't intended that way, I'll give it an honest response.
I've had good experiences with OpenOffice.org, so much so that its word processor component (called "OpenOffice.org Writer") is my main word processor. The one feature I wish it had, easier reformatting of pasted paragraphs, I believe I can implement with its macro capability. When I do, I'll be sure to distribute the program under a license that lets others share and modify it.
As a result of my experience, I look forward to the next revision of OpenOffice.org. I think it's great that OO.o's bug database is public, their code is available for inspection, sharing, and modification, and I recommend OpenOffice.org to my clients who are looking for office software.
But I don't have to bother with all of the bugs in the popular proprietary office suites because I only run free software. If anyone wants a copy of the program I don't have to wonder if I'll be caught for copyright infringement. I can be neighborly (by sharing a copy) and legal. |
