The first of many soon to be reports from the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil... as it happens. This one won't be too eventful but the next posts will. |

First, initial stuff. I am wrecked; malnutrition and 24 hours of travel have left me reeling. Also we have a digital video camera and should (cross your fingers) be able to do live video in a short time i can find anyone to show me (there are video computers).
We are staying in the Casa de Indymedia which is a building filled to the brim with IMC activists from all over (maybe 50+). I will be sleeping on a cement floor with an airline blanket as I didn’t have room to bring anything else (don worry its like 80 degrees and humid).
The first thing I noticed leaving the Porto Alegre airport was a big billboard (note: in the US these are used for advertising beer, perfume, etc) proclaiming that the Israeli military is destroying the hope for a better future and shows a picture of an IDF soldier with a machine gun. It only gets better. There is another one with a hammer and sickle proclaiming "for peace, against capitalism and imperialism" with a hammer and sickle. The majority o the political grafity I have seen is anarchist in origin with lively social commentary all over.
We missed the opening march during to exhaustion and delirium, but plan to attend all the "Life After Capitalism" events. Will keep posted.
ps If you're ever in Brazil try the fried cheese bread, it's like 35cents and delicious. Tomorrow will be a more informative post hopefully with pictures.
in solidarity, t
