Print Media Group Minutes, 17 May 2000 Current rating: 0
17 May 2001
just read. geez.
IMC Print Media Mtg.
5/17/01
Called to order 6:36pm
Present: Lisa, Sascha (facilitator), Mike B., Dave, Brent, Sara, Pauline, Aaron, Nancy, Brian, Omar R.
Minutes taken by Omar R.

A) Introductions-Revised mission statement
1) Sascha: I\'d like to set the mission statement tonight
2) What concerns do people have about the mission statement?
3) Dave ??? raised question of defining \"progressive\"-- what do we mean? Should we state our understanding of it?
4) Brian: Get rid of as many adjectives as we can, explain what we\'re going to do
5) Pauline: include language that IMC is cooperatively run
6) Aaron: Make it more specific, but leave open the option of changing it

B) Focus groups pointless tonight due to low attendance
1) Pauline raised discussion of content. Can we discuss it tonight? Jot down our ideas and discuss it with others when there are more people here
2) Pauline: sections?
3) Aaron: like Paul said, sections induce loyalty among readers
4) Sara: not necessarily art poetry; may be overlooked, but that\'s ok
5) Brent: social justice can be included in any range of media, so poetry can be a section
6) Omar: How is content affected by other considerations like layout and space
7) Sascha: Having enough articles is not a problem; poetry, cartoons-- not a problem.
8) Lisa: Where is the content coming from? What is the ideological agenda? Not intended as criticism
9) Sara: Fact checking takes care of this to a large degree
10) Sascha: we tend to attract more leftist voices…
11) Mike: If a conservative voice is posted as a counterpoint, we should not shun it; should we make an effort to bring in people of various viewpoints?
12) Sara: Seeking motivated people out to foster diverse viewpoints tends to make for insincere members; let\'s go with people we already have. Be aware of conflicts of interest, be willing to step aside on editorial decisions. Self-selection is best for any editorial board.
13) Lisa: who has a voice in this organization?
14) Sascha: there is only a loose structure for resolving deadlocks; otherwise, decisions made by whoever shows up to meetings.

C) Format of Publication
1) Nancy: focus was on getting people to go to Web site; I\'d rather see the print independent of Website
2) Aaron: I agree; we want to reach a larger audience. Maybe part of the paper can be \"for more info go to Web site\"
3) Mike: making it look like the Website suggests that the layout group\'s vision was to have Web site based print pub; this seems like a bad idea

D) Themes of tonight\'s discussion so far
1) Sara: questions about editorial policy, themes, layout questions have been raised tonight. This makes the discussion difficult. Next meeting we could all bring our thoughts about these areas
2) Sascha: doesn\'t defining content contradict the idea of people writing whatever they want to write? We aren\'t trying to define content; we all have something to contribute to content
3) Split into two groups and brainstorm on mission statement: we aim to come out of this meeting with something concrete. 10-15 minutes. Will report on the outcome of our smaller groups.

E) The Groups Return With Their Sage Input and Stuff to Do for Next Time
1) Sara\'s group: clarified present mission statement, tried to combine who we are with what we tend to emphasize. The statement reads as follows: _____ , a project of the UCIMC, is a collectively run publication that emphasizes local, national, and international events, investigative reporting, individual and community self-expression, and meaningful and lively debate. We are an independent forum accessible to voices under-represented in the dominant media.
2) Brent\'s group: problematized notion of mission statement as statement of who we are as opposed to what we do; action verbs; framed mission statement by asking people why we\'re here; indy media can identify problems with other media and to provide solutions
3) Lisa will try to integrate these ideas into a mission statement
4) Brent suggests start of discussion forum (bulletin board) on our Web site so that discussion can continue but people\'s mailboxes won\'t be flooded
5) Aaron suggests that everyone consider funding questions

Meeting adjourned 7:56pm
