Republican Convention Promise: Hold Them To It. Current rating: 0
22 Nov 2002
Questions UI and Urban Leauge distribution of computer access as detrimental to equity in education.
It was good to hear that the University of Illinois and the Urban League are teaming up again to distribute computers to low income households. However, how these two groups could turn $1.3 million dollars into 12 hours of training, software and computers for only 600 households in Champaign County is mindboggleing and merits review. Price the same thing at a local computer retailer and you may have to ask, what did they do with the money again? Were any of the recipients required to volunteer their time in equal number to what was received to spread the training to low income middle school children, at let's say Douglas Library?
At a time when Champaign-Urbana low income school children are scoring poorly on exams and attendance, giving computers to INDIVIDUAL households seems to be "putting the horse before the cart." Of the over FIFTY churches in North Champaign and Urbana, how many have public access sites computers with web access? How many have volunteer computer and mentor staff hours open to other than current parishioners? Is the university at a shortage of for student interns to fill this bill? One of the biggest detriments to the education of lower income middle school children is a lack of after school activities and truancy. How much easier for parents without phones to keep in touch teachers would having this access be? One would think ministers would demand this. How many ministers have background in education much less computer training, if these churches don't even have web access? There is still so much more to be done, is the Urban League the BEST choice of administration. Currently email only mail stations sell for $50 or less and have unlimited access for under $10 a month. It would be blessing if area business men would bring to life the republican party's promise of inclusion at the 2000 convention and, would work with a computer company to bring an easier Internet access those who need it most.
