This short article summarizes the Anti-War Panel organized on Novemeber 2 by the Progressive Resource/Action Cooperative. |
On November 2, approximately fourty people gathered at Illinois Disicples Foundation to hear a panel of teachers, students and concerned parties share their knowledge concerning the potential War on Iraq. Panel members included Kenneth Cuno, University professor and member of Teachers for Peace, Jen Tayabji, member of Illinois Disciples Foundation, Joe Miller of Vietnam Veterans Against the War and Danielle Hargis from the Democratic Solidarity Committee.
Cuno, a Professor of Middle East History opened the discussion by providing a breif history of US involvement in the Middle East and reviewing the political motivations that could be driving the aggressive policies recently proposed by the US. Jen Tayabji spoke of the humanitarian crisis created through the 1991 trade sanctions and raised questions as to our national government's spending budget by comparing recent military spending to amounts allocated to social services. Joe Miller reflected on the VVAW's history and America's foreign military policy. Danielle Hargis concluded the discussion by suggesting the terrible effects a war on Iraq could have on the Palestinian population. With America's attention focused on Iraq, Isreal's actions toward Palestinian refugees would be relatively unchecked. A question and answer session followed |
