Come to the Orpheum Children's Science Museum! |
Looking for somewhere to bring your children on the weekends, or just interested in science? Either way, a great place to go right here in Champaign/Urbana is the Orpheum Children?s Science Museum. Located downtown in the former Orpheum Theatre are exhibits demonstrating river flow, pollution, electricity, weather, mechanics, and much more. Right outside is a dinosaur dig available to the public (weather permitting). There is also a souvenir shop and several animals ? three australian dragons, two turtles, one snake, a tarantula, and several cockroaches. Also, located upstairs is an exhibit of the history of the Orpheum Theatre. The first Saturday of every month there is a Weekend Wizard including special demonstrations and activities (for instance, there will be a demonstration with the physics of toys on December 7). A new addition is the Second Sunday for Seniors; the second Sunday of every month seniors can get in free, bring there grandchildren, participate in special activities, and have snacks. The Orpheum is also available for scheduling field trips and birthday parties located at the museum. Individual memberships are available for $15 and family ones are $35. These last one year and get you free admission and shopping discounts. Otherwise admission is $2 for kids and $3 for adults. Hours are 9am-6pm Tuesdays and 1-6pm Wednesdays through Sundays. The staff is always looking for volunteers along with interested youngsters. I highly recommend a visit to the historic Orpheum Museum! |
